The development will be split into two neighbourhoods. The Urban Quarter will feature a new village square and community buildings with a library and a health centre. The Parkland Quarter will host a nursery, with further retail, health and community facilities.
Alton Estate will also provide 37,000 sq ft of retail and office space, with a focus on affordable workspaces for small businesses and the voluntary sector.
Mark Parker, managing director at Redrow East London, said: “The area has a strong cultural identity and a number of important heritage buildings that we have taken into consideration during the design process.
“The new homes will be delivered in accordance with the design code that has taken inspiration from the modernist buildings of Alton West, and the Victorian streetscape of Roehampton Village. The homes will be surrounded by areas of attractive open space, and new pedestrian and cycle routes will be created, linking Alton Green to the surrounding communities.”
Redrow was selected by Wandsworth Council as development partner for the scheme in 2017, beating off competition from Countryside.
The council started the search for a partner for the estate in March 2016. GVA was appointed to lead the search for a partner to replace 287 flats and houses over a 17-acre area with around 1,000 homes. The entire estate houses more than 7,000 people across some 1,883 homes previously under council ownership, 40% of which were sold through Right to Buy.
