GLA approves LLDC’s £1.1bn East Bank plans
The Greater London Authority has given the green light for the London Legacy Development Corporation’s £1.1bn redevelopment of East Bank.
The hybrid planning application includes development of 600 homes at Stratford Waterfront and the creation of a new cultural hub that will be home to the 550-seat Sadler’s Wells East dance theatre (pictured above), the V&A museum, the BBC and a new campus for the University of the Arts London, London College of Fashion.
Approval of the plans comes after a year-long delay following a revision of the 10.5-acre site masterplan.

Architectural firm Allies and Morrison designed the 600-home residential portion comprising four buildings of up to 27 storeys in height.
This was revised down from initial proposals seeking to deliver towers of up to 47 storeys in height, after complaints that the development would fall within the historic viewing corridor of St Paul’s Cathedral, and spoil the view from Richmond Park.
Statutory deputy mayor Joanne McCartney said: “East Bank is central to the mayor’s vision of creating a powerhouse for artistic excellence, learning, research, performance and exhibitions on the site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Lyn Garner, chief executive of the LLDC, said: “East Bank will be the glue that binds together the different elements on the Park, from world-class visitor attractions and high-tech business districts to thousands of new homes and wonderful parkland and open spaces.”
The LLDC will launch a hunt for a development partner to bring forward the £325m Stratford Waterfront development in a joint venture, backed by grant funding from the GLA.
The procurement is expected to launch in September, with construction to begin next year.
