The boss of JD Sports has insisted that it will crack the American market, despite a string of failures there by other British retailers.
The sports fashion chain has embarked on an expansion drive in the United States, having bought Finish Line, one of America’s biggest footwear and clothing chains, for £400 million last year.
The business has managed to shrug off the problems faced by rival high street chains in recent years and the City has been keen to discover how it fares in America. Peter Cowgill, 66, its executive chairman, said yesterday that he was quietly confident, adding: “The early signs are pretty good.”
