Waterloo hospital charity site up for grabs

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity is preparing to sell a five-acre slice of land to the south of Waterloo station for £200m. Savills has been appointed to find a buyer for the land to the East of St Thomas’ Hospital on Royal Street, which could see a mixed-use development including housing, retail and commercial space. The charity also wants to include a medical facility on the site. A Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity spokesperson said: “We are currently looking for a development partner to work with us on the Royal Street site in Waterloo and will be inviting enquiries over the coming months. “As an independent place-based health foundation, our profits from this development will form part of our endowment, which is used to fund our charitable activities. Over the next decade, we plan to put around £250m into improving health and healthcare in the London boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark.” Hospital trusts around London have been looking for ways to release land to plough back into infrastructure, but sales are often complicated by access for services, the provision of new medical services and affordable housing.
