Criminal landlords should have their properties seized, say MPs

Rogue landlords who commit offences and exploit vulnerable tenants should have their properties confiscated, MPs have said.

Appalling conditions are prevailing in parts of the rental sector because of a “clear power imbalance” that deters tenants from complaining about problems such as excess cold, mould or faulty wiring, according to a report by the Commons housing, communities and local government committee.

It called for greater legal safeguards to protect the most vulnerable tenants from retaliatory evictions, rent increases and harassment.
