The government’s forthcoming ban on letting agent fees will not lead to higher rents, MPs have said.
In November 2016 the chancellor announced a ban on fees charged to tenants by letting agents, which can be as high as £500. The National Landlords Association said at the time that the ban would lead to higher rents as agents would pass the fees on to landlords instead.
However, a report by the housing, communities and local government committee has said that the risk of rents rising is low, based on the experience of such a ban being introduced in Scotland in 2012.
