£75m revamp for former Belfast Telegraph building

MIPIM 2018: Plans have been unveiled for a £75m redevelopment of the former home of the Belfast Telegraph newspaper. The scheme being delivered by McAleer & Rushe and Belfast City council will provide 230,000 sq ft of commercial space with retail, restaurants and cafés on the ground floor accessible by a pedestrian route through the building. Designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, the 19th century building is located adjacent to the Ulster University Campus and Central Library and will be known as The Sixth after the evening edition of the newspaper, which street vendors touted as the “Sixth Late Tele”. The Belfast Telegraph moved north of the city centre to Clarendon Dock in 2016. Stephen Surphlis, property director at McAleer & Rushe, said: “The Sixth will play an important role in the regeneration of Belfast by delivering high-quality workspace for global and local businesses, particularly those in the professional, creative and technology sectors.” A planning application for the scheme will be submitted following a 12-week consultation led by planning consultant Turley.
