EG tackles the big questions

Panellists were dismayed by their decision to vote against plans and hold out for a Yorkshire-wide deal. But that won’t stop Sheffield from voting for a mayor for the city region next May.

At the Yorkshire event, Doncaster and Barnsley took a verbal thrashing a week after the two cities walked out of a devolution deal that would have also involved Rotherham and Sheffield.
Panellists were dismayed by their decision to vote against plans and hold out for a Yorkshire-wide deal. But that won’t stop Sheffield from voting for a mayor for the city region next May.
Until then, the panellists, including Sheffield City Council chief executive John Mothersole, said they will keep pushing for a deal for the wider Sheffield area.
In Edinburgh, housing topped the agenda. A 100-strong audience joined the panel at The Hub, in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, where panellists spoke about investor appetite in the Scottish capital, before opening up about their likes and dislikes about doing business in the city. While Edinburgh’s political instability was a recurring theme, the city was lauded for its vibrancy.
