Planning activity down 18% post-Brexit vote

Major planning applications fell by 18% in the 12 months after the Brexit referendum, with residential proposals experiencing the biggest fall, according to EG planning research.

Just under 6,000 major housing proposals were recorded in the 12 months to July, down from 7,500 in the preceding 12 months – a 22% fall (see graphs below).

All the main property sectors reported a downturn, with industrial proving the most resilient against the decline, with only a 2% fall in proposals year-on-year. Retail and office applications fell by 21% and 19% respectively.
