Businesses and local councils could be forced to pay hundreds of millions of pounds more each year in taxes on rubbish from 2008, under proposals being considered by Gordon Brown.
The small print of this week’s pre-Budget Report revealed that the chancellor may decide to increase the rate of landfill tax “more steeply” in future, taking proceeds to well over a billion pounds by the end of the decade.
