Level of company failures soars

The number of companies going out of business leapt by 8.9% last year to the highest level in eight years, according to Department of Trade and Industry figures.

The insolvencies were seen as the effects of corporate restructuring and profits warnings trickled down to medium-sized companies.

The increase took the annual number of insolvencies to 16,305, the highest since 1994.
