London could step in to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out last week.
Spiralling costs are understood to be the cause of the withdrawal, with the bill for hosting the Games trebling to A$7bn (£3.7bn).
London mayor Sadiq Khan has expressed a desire to host the Games in London. Officials estimate it would cost around £500m to have the Games in the capital.
