Cambridge University faces backlash over green belt solar

Cambridge University has been accused of wanting to “industrialise” the countryside over plans to build a large solar farm on green belt land.

The farm would cover around 90 acres near the village of Barton about five miles west of the city centre. It would be in place for at least 40 years and is intended to provide the university with 26% of its energy as it aims to be net zero by 2038.

South Cambridgeshire District Council approved the plans last week, but there has been a backlash. One councillor said he would continue objecting “until I see a solar panel on every south-facing roof at Cambridge University”.
