Revised Sage plans get nod from Gateshead Council
Revised proposals for a new Sage Arena and International Conference Centre in the heart of Gateshead have secured approval from the council.
A revised planning application for the £350m GDV project was submitted in March this year featuring design and scheme changes. Specifically, the dual-branded 344-bedroom hotel, which formed a part of the original plans approved in March 2022, has been removed from the scheme and replaced with an urban park. The £48m hotel development has been relocated to vacant land within the Baltic Quarter, directly opposite the Sage project.
Changes within the planning application also included updates to the timeline for the delivery of the Sage, which was broken down into smaller delivery packages. The Sage International Conference Centre is now expected to open in autumn 2025, followed by the arena in 2027.

Earlier this year, Gateshead Council secured £20m in funding from the UK government’s Levelling Up Fund. Construction work on the conference centre is due to begin later this year, which will see the delivery of 61,570 sq ft of exhibition space, 27,125 sq ft of adaptable meeting space, 17 conference rooms and a banqueting suite. Partners on the project include Gateshead Council, ASM Global, Ask Real Estate, Patrizia UK and Sage.
Martin Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council, said: “The development will bring numerous opportunities and benefits to our residents, attracting visitors, creating jobs and bringing millions of pounds of investment to Gateshead and the North East.”
