Retail sales stalled this month before an expected drop in March as consumer demand weakened amid the continued squeeze on incomes, a new survey has found.
The latest distributive trades survey by the CBI found that retailers remained pessimistic about their businesses over the coming three months.
But sentiment had improved slightly compared with last quarter, when the fallout after the government’s mini-Budget, political instability and inflation at a 41-year high wore down business confidence.
