Bruntwood’s Greater Manchester King Street regeneration approved
Bruntwood and Trafford Council have been given the go ahead for the transformation of King Street in Stretford, Greater Manchester, which forms the first phase of a multi-million-pound wider masterplan.
Last year, Trafford Council received £17.6m funding from the government’s £830m Future High Streets Fund to regenerate and transform Stretford town centre.
The planning application was submitted in March and proposed to pedestrianise streets, create more greenery and open spaces, and reconfigure the town centre.
The scheme is set to become a home for retailers, eateries and bars, positioned alongside a covered shopping area aimed at local independent businesses. A quiet service street adjacent to the mall will be repurposed to create the new Little King Street.
The plans also include creation of a new King Street Square that will provide outdoor seating areas, spaces for market stalls and events. It will also see a redevelopment of the existing multi-storey car park, making it more secure and easier to access and navigate through.
Preparatory works have already begun on site, with development set to start in early 2023 and completion set for Summer 2024.
Bruntwood town centre and consumer brands director Andrea George said: “Now we have the green light we can start the transformation process and begin working with national, regional and independent operators and retailers to build a new community in Stretford.”
Later this year, Bruntwood and the council plan to lodge second phase proposals, featuring up to 800 new homes, green public open space and a new canal side neighbourhood.
