UK economy stagnates as July fails to hit expectations

The UK economy has stalled, as growth failed to reach economists’ targets.

Figures for July show output rising by an estimated 0.2%, following a sharp fall of 0.6% in June. But the modest rebound means that GDP actually stagnated at 0% in the three months to the end of July.

The level of growth was below the 0.4% forecast by City economists for the three months. They have warned that the economy remains at risk of a “shallow” recession as the cost of living crisis hits households and businesses.
