Horrified peers have condemned Michael Gove’s suggestion they should move to Stoke-on-Trent, insisting that if they were forced to move, MPs should come with them.
Lord Young of Cookham, a former Conservative cabinet minister, argued that “sauce for the ermined goose is surely sauce for the plebeian gander” as peers condemned the idea of moving them from the Commons.
Gove made the suggestion last month when vetoing a proposed temporary home for the Lords in the Queen Elizabeth II conference centre. He said he would “wholeheartedly welcome the relocation of the House of Lords to one of our great cities”, suggesting Stoke.
