First look: Euston’s £500m HS2 station gets a makeover
Plans for the £500m HS2 station at London Euston have had a major makeover, after designers published fresh images of the new terminus.
New concept images show a revamped station with an angular facade, marking a significant departure from original designs released seven years ago.
HS2 said the new designs are based on a less complex, more efficient, 10-platform station which would be built in a single stage. In October last year, HS2 confirmed the station would be scaled back from 11 to 10 platforms.

HS2 revealed in 2020 that £105m had been spent on designing the as-yet-unbuilt scheme since 2009. The consortium which drew up the latest designs include Arup, engineering consultant WSP and Grimshaw Architects. Construction firms Mace and Dragados will build the project in a joint venture.

HS2 minister Andrew Stephenson said the station was “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create an iconic destination in the area”.
“This station will not only benefit the local community by enabling the comprehensive redevelopment of the area but will serve as a transport superhub acting as a gateway to the Midlands and the North – enabling us to deliver better railways across the nation sooner than under previous plans,” he said.
The station is designed to target a BREEAM Outstanding rating.
Cost and time-saving measures on the new design include making elements of the geometric roof off-site. It will then be installed using modular construction techniques. The station hall will be home to the largest concourse in the UK.
Laurence Whitbourn, Euston area client director at HS2, said: “HS2’s London Euston station is one of the most complex parts of the HS2 route, situated in a densely populated residential area and adjacent to a busy operational railway.
“HS2 is absolutely committed to getting Euston right, engaging with the local community and stakeholders as we continue to progress our designs.”
