One in five homeworkers found that rising bills meant remote working was more expensive than commuting during the past month.
The Office for National Statistics said almost half of people working from home spent less than they would have normally, thanks to reduced costs for travel and food offsetting a rise in spending on energy and internet access.
But as many as 92% of people living in rented accommodation reported increased spending on utilities, compared with 86% for those paying a mortgage. The figures also found people working from home with children were more likely to report increased spending on food, utilities and internet access compared with home workers without children.
