A £100m expansion to treble the home of Wimbledon tennis has received more than 1,000 objections and only 27 letters of support.
The All England Lawn Tennis Club wants to build a 28m high, 8,000-seat stadium along with 38 new courts on the site of the neighbouring golf club. It paid £63.75m for the 73-acres three years ago.
Residents pointed out that the stadium would be the equivalent of a 10-storey building, which would dominate an area designated as metropolitan open land and only be used for “two to four weeks a year”.
