Khan issues fresh guidance on meeting emissions targets
Sadiq Khan has issued fresh guidance to developers on how new schemes can meet emissions targets set out in the London Plan.
The mayor of London has told property companies and planning authorities they must prioritise urban greening, energy efficiency and creating space for walkers, cyclists and public transport in new developments.
Developers should monitor and report back on the operational energy performance of buildings forming part of major schemes for at least five years post-construction, the mayor’s office said.
They should also look to high-scoring types of urban greening where possible, such as woodland or intensive green roofs, which provide habitats for different species of animals and plants.
Companies should also create new walking routes and improve cycling networks around developments, as well as providing transport infrastructure, such as bus garages, rail depots, or space for trams, where possible.
This guidance will form a “material consideration” when it comes to making decisions on planning applications and developing local plans.
Khan said: “I am committed to making London a zero-carbon city by 2030 and delivering a brighter future for London – one that is greener, fairer and more prosperous for everyone.
“That is why I have developed these new pieces of guidance, building on the ambitious targets in my London Plan, that will ensure new developments in London prioritise urban greening and make space for sustainable transport like walking, cycling and public transport.”
