BHS stores still empty after five years
A fifth of former BHS shops remain empty five years after the chain disappeared from the high streets.
The discovery has fuelled fears that many of the holes left on the high street by the demise of department stores could become permanent.
Out of BHS’s 167 stores, 35 are still unoccupied five years after their doors closed for the final time in August 2016, according to research conducted by the Local Data Company.

Kirkcaldy, Stevenage, Huddersfield, Hull and Ipswich are among the many places that have not managed to find an occupier for their former BHS store.
Just over half are occupied, representing 92 sites, with some taken over by other retailers, while others have become adventure parks.
The number of department stores in the UK has tumbled from 1,436 at the end of 2015 to 947 by August 2021.
