Liverpool loses Unesco world heritage status
Unesco has removed Liverpool’s world heritage status after a UN committee decided that its waterfront developments were “detrimental” to the city’s value.
After its 44th annual conference held in Fuzhou, China, the organisation said the developments have led to an “irreversible loss of attributes conveying the outstanding universal value of the property”.
The projects in question include the planned Everton FC stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, and Peel’s £5.5bn Liverpool Waters scheme.

Joanne Anderson, the city’s mayor, said the decision was “incomprehensible”, adding: “Our world heritage site has never been in better condition, having benefitted from hundreds of millions of pounds of investment across dozens of listed buildings and the public realm.
“We will be working with government, Historic England and other stakeholders to examine our next steps.”
Liverpool is the third site to be stripped of its status, after Dresden’s Elbe Valley in Germany and the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in Oman.
