Planners approve refurb of historic New Zealand HQ
Planners have given the green light for a major revamp of New Zealand’s grade II-listed diplomatic headquarters in central London.
The Crown Estate will push ahead with the refurbishment of New Zealand House, the 14-storey home of the country’s consulate in the UK in Haymarket, SW1.
The 1960s tower block comprises four podium levels as well as the main tower, with terraces on the third and top floors.

The 130,000 sq ft complex provides 110,000 sq ft of office space, including for the New Zealand High Commission, which holds a long lease at the property. After refurbishment it will occupy around 60,000 sq ft, slightly more than it does currently.
Once completed the revamped building will provide a similar amount of office space and restore key features, such as the grand stair ceremonial staircase.
In addition, The Crown Estate will refurbish the grade I-listed Royal Opera Arcade, which sits adjacent to New Zealand House.
Westminster City Council approved an application for the works earlier this month, according to planning documents.
