Stockport votes against GMCA spatial framework

The Greater Manchester Spatial Framework’s future hangs in the balance after Stockport Council voted against the initiative. Stockport counted 26 votes for and 35 votes against the framework, which outlines plans for 180,000 homes to be built across Greater Manchester. This is despite leaders of all 10 Greater Manchester councils backing the draft framework over a month ago. A question mark now hangs over the plans, as all 10 local authorities in the region need to back the spatial framework for it to go ahead. The beleaguered framework has long faced concerns by local councillors and green belt campaigners about protecting green belt space in the region. It has faced delays since it was first released in 2016, when the framework proposed to deliver 227,000 homes. This target has since been slashed back. A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority said: “While we regret the position that has been taken by Stockport councillors and the implications this will have for the borough, Greater Manchester will continue to work to build a sustainable future with good homes, jobs, and growth. “Greater Manchester leaders will meet to consider the next steps in the coming days after Stockport Council’s cabinet has met and taken the final decision on the GMSF.” To send feedback, e-mail lucy.alderson@egi.co.uk or tweet @LucyAJourno or @estatesgazette
