Birmingham Airport fights city’s first skyscraper

Birmingham Airport has objected to the city’s tallest building and first ever skyscraper at One Eastside. The airport said Greystar’s build-to-rent scheme, which is being delivered by Court Collaboration, will affect the “safeguarding zone of the formalised flightpath”. One Eastside is set to be the tallest tower in Birmingham, rising to 51 storeys or 160m. The US build-to-rent giant is set to invest £155m in the 667-home scheme. However, the council said the scheme will be refused if the airport does not pull its objection. Birmingham Airport has said there is insufficient information to demonstrate that the cranes needed for construction will not adversely affect the recently formalised flightpath. Court Collaboration is working with the airport to provide details of a “saddleback” crane, which would not exceed the height of the city’s BT Tower and should not affect the safeguarding zone.
